Step 1: Choose the Right Screwdriver Bits for the Project

For instance, if you are planning to drive a screw that has a star head, then you need a screwdriver bit that has a star design.

Step 2: Fix the Driver Bit Into the Screwdriver

A chuck is found on the front part of an electric screwdriver and holds a driver bit into position as you are fastening screws. To use an electric screwdriver, you have to connect the screwdriver bit to the chuck.

While most chucks have different opening mechanisms, many can be opened through a twisting motion. Open it up by turning the collar of the electric screwdriver in an anticlockwise direction.

Next, insert the driver bit into the opening, then tighten it by turning the collar of the electric screwdriver in a clockwise direction.

Step 3: Place the Drill Bit on the Head of the Screw to Test Whether It Is the Right Type

Once you finish choosing the driver bit that you are going to use, place it on the screw head and check whether it fits correctly or not. This makes it easier for you to know the right size of the bit.

Now, hold your chosen bit at a 45-degree angle and check whether the bit still fits perfectly on the screw head or not. If it fits perfectly in that position, then you have chosen the right bit.

Step 4: Select the Right Torque Setting and the Right Speed

Torque is the power of an electric screwdriver. It makes it easier for you to fasten screws in a wide range of products.

If you are working on a light task that doesn’t require too much force, then you should select a low-torque setting on your cordless screwdriver.

On the other hand, if you plan to drive screws on a hard surface, you should switch to the high-torque setting.  The torque may change from one project to another.

Step 5: Turn on the Power Source of the Electric Screwdriver

Once you have selected the right torque, turn on the power source. Some power drill drivers are powered by batteries, while others have to be connected to a power source to function.

There are two types of electric screwdrivers—corded screwdriver and cordless screwdriver. Cordless screwdrivers are powered by different batteries, while a a corded screwdriver draws electricity straight from the electrical power supply and has a power cable.

If you are using a cordless screwdriver, turn the power button on.

On the other hand, if you are using a corded electric screwdriver, connect it to a power source close to your workstation. While a drill driver has the same functionality as an electric screwdriver, it is a power tool designed for more complex tasks.

Step 6: Test the Electric Screwdriver

Before you start your DIY project, you have to test your screwdriver to see whether it functions effectively or not.

Hold the drill firmly, then place your finger on the trigger button. Press it slightly. If the drill bit doesn’t rotate, check your power supply connection or the chuck connection.

Step 7: Drill a Pilot Hole on the Surface You Will Be Working On

A pilot hole is a pre-drilled hole that guides a screw in the right direction.

Fastening a screw into a surface that doesn’t have a pilot hole can be quite cumbersome. For starters, the screw might go in the wrong direction.

If you are fastening a screw into a piece of furniture that doesn’t have a pilot hole, you risk splitting the wood.

Step 8: Place a Screw on the Pilot Hole and Drive It In

Once you finish drilling the pilot hole, place the tip of the screw on the pilot hole and drive it into the surface that you are working on. This is done by placing the drill bit into the screw head and applying pressure to the back of the tool to push the screw into the hole. Keep it at a consistent angle.

You can also practice on a wooden surface and familiarise yourself with your electric screwdriver. This makes it easier for you to avoid making a mistake or causing a problem when working on your main DIY project.

Clean the components of the electric screwdriver and store them in a safe place once you finish working. If it comes with a case, it is always best to place it in the case to protect it from dust and damage.
